Unless you live in super-cold climates, running the block heater for a couple of hours in the early morning, then again in mid-afternoon is usually enough to get the tractor running on a moment's notice.
I wouldn't leave the block heater running all the time. Dad had one burn the cord off a couple of years ago, and was lucky he didn't burn down the building. An inch one way or the other and it would've started a fire.
They do make good timers, or at least they did. We've been using the same one for at least 25 years, twice a day, every day.
