Myself and a pal, who are both in manufacturing, have a small "speciality part" light manufacturing venture/hobby.
That being said, the very same problem does arise; no one wants to pay for the solution that they need. You can usually find a few die-hards that are willing to pay what it actually costs to manufacture a part, and that is pleasure; but it seems most guys want you to do it for them as an act of near-charity.
I guess we (myself included) are just used to cheap parts.
