New post rather than hijack DC Snider one. MD tractors used a 3 bolt starter housing from the begining. Non diesel M and stage 1 SM used the same 2 bolt starter housing. When IH made chassis changes for use of engine driven liftall attachment or stage 2 SM diesel and non diesel tractors. Clutch housing was changed to the same 3 bolt starter housing for both and it was the same housing for both. This housing was different from the 3 bolt MD and stage 2 SMD diesel in that it placed the starter a different distance from the centerline of the crankshaft compared to the stage 2 housing. After the late clutch housing came about it was also used as a replacement for the 2 early housings. Different starter noses had to be bought when changing over. Some M tractors ended up with the late housing because of breakage.
