My first vehicle was a '47 KB-5 International one and half ton truck. My mother loved it because she figured I wouldn't be able to kill myself in it. I bought it a GSA auction in 1961. I can still remember taking a girl friend to a dance at her school and not telling her that her dress had a grease stain on the back. Several years later, my mother died of cancer but I still had the truck. In fact I still have the truck; it is now repowered with a Detroit Diesel and a nice Clark 5 speed. But I digress. One day back in the sixties, I was about ten miles from home in city traffic and the gear shift lever wouldn't work. The pin that keeps it from revolving had sheared and I could not select any gear. I removed the floor board and the top of the tranny. I studied the gooey mess of gears and figured out what needed to be moved to get the truck to move. I found a heavy screwdriver under the seat, stepped on the clutch, and put the tranny into second gear using the screwdriver. After a while, I figured that I could double clutch and find third. That went well but I resisted going after fourth. I couldn't take anymore oil flying around in the cab. I managed to get the truck home before the windshield became totally saturated with 140 wt gear oil.

Then there was the time I had a couple of quart cans of paint in the twelve foot stake body. Up ahead was a traffic cop directing traffic at a rail crossing. You guessed it. One quart bounced out and rolled under the rear wheels. The cop got creamed (it was off-white interior) as well as the car in the opposite lane. Had no idea what had happened until people started pointing at me and honking their horns.
