Jims right that youre right,,,The armatures output is across the two fixed brushes that are 180 opposite, ones grounded the other leads to the ARM post, the Filed current (and resulting genny output) can be regulated by movement of the third brush (wires to first of the 2 series field windings), closer to the main the more current, farther away the less.
The dead grounding of the Field post by passes anY light switch etc problems and as Jim notes that makes her full charge so if she dont charge then I suspect a bad genny (still may be other causes) The troubleshooting he posted (try the motor test also) ought to help diagnose the problem but often the light switch may be inoperable or not be well grounded
