It is normal to have to use glow plugs even when warm unless you just shut it off for a few seconds. There is no resistor in that system, BUT, those glow plugs are extremely sensitive to high voltage. If you are using a battery charger or jumping with another vehicle you can pop them real quick depending on state of charge in batterys etc. Any thing over about 14 volts can blow them and as normal charging voltage is usually over that , you should not put glow plugs back on to clean exhaust after starting engine. You should hold them on all the time you are starting and keep them on until clear and that will normally keep charging voltage down as the generator does not put out enough amps to reach regulated voltage with glow plugs on. I have seen guys blow all six real quick with their chargers and jump starting procedures.
