I am not on this board much but I can tell you exactly why they were done. The tractor engines getting wore out, then having to hand crank as the owners had fought the cranks way too much and the engines were avaible cheap and easy to install, you needed to use the car clutch and tranney as well in low gear, that enabled you to run the engine at the speed for it and still keep the gearing of the tractor and it was a lot cheaper than buying a new SM or 400 yet they then pulled the same loads the SM or 400 would pull instead of the 2 bottom plow that the F 20 pulled and 3 bottoms or 4 bottoms they got a lot more work done, A lot of them were like that in my area and the F 30 they put larger engines like the big Chryslers in them and then pulled 5 bottom plows. And at that time try pricing a 5 plow tractor and pricing the conversions and at the difference when you did not have the money to buy a new large tractor that is the way you went. They would use more fuel than the new big tractors but with fuel prices at thet time it was no big deal. The work they wood do was.
