There are a number of way to check if the engine is locked up. Of course setting a battery in it and hitting the starter button is one way.Or grabbing the fan if the fan belt is good and tight and trying to move the crank shaft is another way which I use a lot. Or you can try to turn it over with the hand crank if you have one. I could go on and on but lets just say an engine unless diesel is easy to turn by hand. Ya your not going to spin it like the starter does but hey your human and it is not and has a lot more guts then you do
