Now this could be some of the best news I've heard all day! As for noise, I don't really recall hearing any obvious noise. I haven't had it running since last fall and I have a few small maintenance tasks to tackle before starting it up again.
So, right now I'm hoping that I find the transmission in overfilled, the loose nut in the final drive accounts for my wobble, and I manage to get through this without having to install seals and bearings. If that is possible, I will be a happy man indeed! Thanks all for your help.
The guy at napa said It might also be possible to take the bearings that aren't worn too badly and remove all the ball bearings, clean and re-grease, replace ball bearings and reinstall. But he also said it would be a major pain in the hiney. any thoughts?

Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
