In my experience most were nodular iron pipe plugs. If yours has "ears" it may have been replaced with a different plug to make it convienient to drain water (when that was the common way to prevent freezing) Many of those were made of White metal, zinc, pot metal. Try a magnet on it if it is iron it will take a braze. If nodular iron it should weld with Ni-rod. Jim
