John I have the same tractor and mower. Mine did about the same thing. The only difference was that when I let the clutch out it died rather quickly. Problem was with the spindle bearings on the mower. They would not turn. It had been a long time since I greased them. Put in a couple of strokes each and they have been working fine ever since.
