Don't get too excited yet. 6 months is not long to sit. Any oil in the water? Put some Marvel Mystery Oil in your gas to see if the backfiring will ease up. It may just be mildly sticking valves. And get the engine good and hot. While you've got the pan off, check the clearance on a rod bearing just to make sure the bearings are OK. The Red is probably on target that the oil pump needs a little help. I run 20w50 in my old tractors to help oil pressure. Helps the oil pump move more fluid.
