Even after you weld it, make it a habit to shift in "squares."
Straight ahead/back to get to neutral, straight sideways to the next pair of gears, then straight ahead/back into the next gear.
People tend to shift in a "V" shape, which is how you slip out of the rails and end up in two gears at once. I did that exactly twice. First time Dad was annoyed. Second time, suffice it to say the air was BLUE.
