most of the head gaskets I have used are marked "this side up" or "up" or "engine side"
If your's is unmarked, then which ever way all the water ports match up with the head and block. If they match both ways, then if I were doing it, I wouldn't worry about which side up. Copper coat and install.
The regular is a low rpm, low compression engine. pretty forgiving. Someone may correct me, but the reason for directional markings on head gaskets is non-symetrical water ports / oil ports / etc. Sent an engine out to be rebuilt, and it came back with one bank on the v-8 with the gaskter installed backwards. Over heated and warped the head because some of the water ports were blocked. Shop made it right, but it can happen.
