Next time mark the distributor and the mount somehow (soapstone?) and run them until they get out of time. Check the marks.
Thing is, you have TWO tractors that are BOTH doing the EXACT same thing. The odds of both tractors having the exact same problem at the exact same time are slim.
I do troubleshooting for a living and the first thing I look for in situations where two separate units have the same problem is commonalities. 999 times out of 1000, the commonality is the cause of the problem. Please don't take this the wrong way but your adjusting of the timing is the thing that is common between the two tractors.

Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?").
