Beat-up washers on connecting rod bolts?

Hello - I removed the oil pan on my M to see if it was full of sludge (glad to say it wasn't). While examining the connecting rods, I noticed flat washers that extend out from under the connecting rod bolts about 3/8". The sides of the washers that would have otherwise protruded past the end of the connecting rod cap (away from the piston end) are all beat up - looks like someone purposely bent them back up against the head of the bolts with a hammer or something. Is this a good thing? What might have caused it? The engine seems to run fine, although I haven't really been able to put a load on it yet other than running up some modest hills in road gear. Thanks in advance!
