I think I posted a similar question a couple of years ago; you may want to check the archives for responses. I don't remember if it was for a 300 Utility or a 350 Utility.
I ended up using a chemical stripper to remove the paint from the tag. The serial number is stamped into the tag, and became legible once the paint was gone.
The other data (company name, model, etc.) were originally in black paint, so the remover pretty well obliterated them.
For what it's worth, when I remove a tag I stamp the serial number directly on the tractor where the tag was. That way, when a new tag is installed it will cover and preserve the correct serial number. I figure this may make things a little easier for someone a few years down the road.
