You remove the distributor cap. Place the transmission in the highest gear. Then you rock the tractor until the rubbing block on your points are on the high point on one of the lobes. Then use a feeler gauge and set the point gap. Then apply some lube on the lobes where the rubbing block rides. You only need to set No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke if you pulled the distributor off the engine and didn't note where the rotor was pointing.
You use a timing light to check your timing with engine at an idle. You connect the lead off the timing light to No1 sparkplug near the radiator and the power leads to your battery. Hal
