On the switch to 12v and the starter ring needing replaced... take the starter to an auto-electric place and have the field windings replaced with 12 coils. I'd bet it still has the 6v coils and that can cause the starter to spin too fast before engaging the ring. I didn't have to change my flywheel ring after installing the 12v windings... it engages fine now where before it would just grind the gears several times before engaging.
BTW, you should get there to buy it faster than a guy to a half price bikini car wash.
