I would think, with those parts missing, you would be complaining about shifting problems.
Hard to shift... Won't shift... Floppy range lever...
Then again, I do know people who are so "out of it" that they'll drive 10 miles on a flat tire before it occurrs to them that something MIGHT be wrong.
For reference, the H-N-L-R (aka range) lever on your 966 should snap from position to position, and stay where you put it. If it doesn't, you need to open the range cover and replace that spring and roll pin.
If the range lever snaps smartly from position to position and stays where you put it, those parts are from a previous repair. The likelihood of it being leftover parts from an old repair go up if you just recently bought this tractor.
