Most likely a lean high speed mixture as Jim and the Red suggest.
Quick way to determine: When the engine begins to spit/miss, GRADUALLY pull out the choke rod. If you find a choke setting where the engine smooths out and runs well, a lean high speed adjustment is the problem.
HOWEVER ignition issues can also cause this. Look for include worn/dirty plugs, plugs gapped too wide (should be 0.025 - 0.030), breaker points gapped too narrow (should be 0.020), worn out points, failing ignition coil, etc.
