Flipping the bracket just lowers the alternator. The correct length belt keeps it inside the hood. I installed the alternator with it right up against the block then measure for a belt.
I mounted a Delco alternator on an H and had clearance so the hood fit properly without butchering it up. It's tight. The belt needs to be short and you have to have the alternator off when you put the belt on. Assemble it and tighten. I did later have an issue with the belt stretching and didn't have enough clearance to tighten it. I replaced the belt with another brand and haven't had any issues yet.
After that I went to Hitachi alternators. Much easier to work with.
Picture shows my 300 and Hitachi alternator. I have about a 1/4"-1/2" clearance between the alternator and block.
