Smoke out of the breather,well, it is either blow by past pistons, coolant vaporizing from oil(but you said oil level was ok) or a hot bearing. I would pull drain plug and check for foreign material. If engine seemed stiff you may just have put enough pressure on crankshaft thrust bearing during assembly to smoke it. These engine do no have a full flow oil filter so stuff goes through the whole lube system if any foreign material is floating around in there. You can pull filter and look for filings also. Sure hope not but can't come up with any other good options.
