Poor mans test of alternator. Put a screwdriver on the back side of the alternator, when engine is not running there should be no magnetic draw from screwdriver to alternator. Start engine, if the screwdriver sticks to alternator then it is charging. What you really need is a volt meter to check voltage before starting engine and after it is running. Battery voltage will be about 12 volts and then charging voltage should jump to above 13.6 to about 14.5. The two small wires on top of alternator, number two should be live with battery voltage at all times and the number one should read voltage when key is turned on. If either one does not have voltage your alternator will not charge. A simple two dollar test light works good for checking voltage to those two terminals. They have a habit of corroding or breaking off.
