I wish I had a picture to show you, but the u-joint was necessary. The steering shaft for the B was offset to the right of the center of the tractor too far to run directly into the worm gear(on a slant from the steering wheel to the top of the front bolster which topped out below the radiator). To make the entry IH made two directional changes with the u-joint. The first was a turn to the left toward the center of the tractor to an appropriate location for the worm gear. The worm gear was not aligned straight with the frame of the tractor but was at an angle rotated about 15 to 20 degrees to the left from straight forward. The second change was to flatten the slanting shaft since the worm gear though not pointing straight forward was level. So two directional changes with one u-joint.
