Non-detergent oil doesn't get dirty as quick, but it still gets dirty. I don't think you can tell. As I said in an earlier post, I always change my tractors to detergent and have never had a problem. But if it gets real dirty quickly, change it. Somebody mentioned an oil filter plugging up, but they are bypass filters. If you lose oil pressure it is easy to drop the pan and clean the screen, but in over 30 old tractors I've not had that problem.
