Well, I did learn the hard way several years ago. A chap rebuilt Dad's AW-7 Diesel and it quickly spun a big end bearing and damaged the crankshaft. My own experience was having a Mercedes OM617 motor rebuilt. It is a three litre motor fitted to 300D cars. When I went to collect the car, complete with new pistons, sleeves, bearings, linished and crack-trested crankshaft, rebuilt camshaft etc. it was running horribly and blowing smoke. It turned out to have no power either. After some heated discussions, including explaining to the fellow that Mercedes Benz diesels are not designed to blow smoke unless turned off, I undertook the necessary corrections:
1: Retime valves - timing chain was fitted one tooth out on cam gear.
2: Fit new manifold studs - they damaged several of mine and fitted some from a Toyota landcruiser.
3: Fit the anti-vibration shock absorbers, which had been left off
4: Fit alternator support bracket - also left off.
5: Re-time injection pump as per Bosch and Mercedes-Benz instructions.
My time and extra parts cost me about $400.
However, there are some excellent diesel mechanics, who take due care and attention as well as understanding the motors they work on, so I am not totally disillusioned!
