436 engine noise

Had to take my 1586 into dealer for some work - they told me I needed an OH cause I had a scored piston. Engine will start and has a rythmic tick to it and a fair amount of blowby - after warmup the tick goes away -- they claimed a scored piston or wrist pin bushing. Well brought it home - told them I"d do the OH -- Its been like this for a year (since I got it- come to think of it when I got it from original owner no noise until few days after unloading when it was cold out then I noticed it) - started it other day - was hot out (mid 90"s cbut cold engine) and no noise and virtually no blowby. Any ideas? Makes me think I dont need to OH it - done it last 2 times I started it - ran like new 436 in it. Dont really want to spend $1500 if I dont have to - It"ll run the chisel this fall but I have backup -- If it goes down during planting it takes a 1/2 day to switch monitor and starter fertilizer controler over. Wondering if valve noise could be the cause like a valve out of adjustment and tapping - Just thought of this --did an OH on a 706 gasser once and made same type of noise - we had droped pushrod and missed the lifter and it was hitting directly on the cam but would still run great - obviously found and fixed that ASAP.
