Calvin I am looking at the IT Shop manual. Loosen the two bolts and pull the top of the mag towards you. Then rotate the engine until you have number one piston on top dead center. The mark on the pulley should line up with the timing pointer on the engine. Now push the top of the magneto back towards the engine slowly until you hear the impulse coupling snap. Tighten the bolts. Since you mentioned backfiring, it sounds like the timing is well off. Good luck. You should get some more responses as the day wears on.
