The backing plate is a tight slip fit into the tranny housing.
Look for 4 shallow slots spaced 90 deg around the OD of inside edge of the plate. (Note the slots will often be filled with dirt and hard to spot.) Use a screwdriver or a chisel in the slots to gradually pry the plate out.
Once it gets started the plate usually slips the rest of the way out with little difficulty.
