You can adjust them with the engine at an idle. It would be easier to have one person with the feeler gauge and a helper doing the adjusting.
You also can jack up one of rear wheels as been mentioned and place the tranny in 5th gear after removing the plugs. Have the helper to rotate the wheel while you hold your thumb over the plug hole until feel pressure. Then drop a long plastic straw on top of the piston and then you watch the straw rise while the helper slowly turns the rear wheel. When it quits rising you can now adjust valves 1-2-3 & 5 counting from the fan end of the engine. Once these are adjusted to .020" rotate the engine 360 degrees and adjust 4-6-7 & 8. Hal
