Like Gary mentioned, it does sound like strictly a TA problem. Very similar symptoms to what my 886 was doing. I was told by knowledgeable I.H. mechanic to NOT drive the I.H.'s with hydraulic TA's when they are not working properly. Can cause more damage very quickly. I just had the dealer put a 15 year warranty TA in my 886. Cost was not as bad as I had thought it could be $3,000 for parts and labor.
