I use regular gasket material sold in sheets at automotive supply houses. I have used other materials like fibre board, card stock and heavy construction paper, and usually have had no difficulties. But gasket material is designed as such from the get go and will hold up under all conditions. Thick rubber inpregnated cork works well for valve cover gaskets but holes must be punched rather than cut with a ball peen hammer. Those low cost Chinese gasket punches have worked well for me, just be careful not to knick an edge or clean cuts will be impossible.
