I would start at the thermostat. 28 bucks at napa and its a good idea to change it just to get the crud out. Pry it out and replace with a fresh gasket. I had to make mine. Never run without one on place, the water will circulate faster than it can cool. Then set your mag at top dead center. There are videos on youtube that will show you how. Then check fuel mixtures, lean runs hot, rich runs black smoke and sputters. Smooth plus a quarter turn on the setting.
