I own a 1949 Cub and had a similar problem. After a lot of work and much frustration I finally put on a new coil. My Cub has a magneto and they are just a bit different to time namely can't use a timing light the same as you can with a distributer. The coil cost me $65 at Case/IH dealer. After the addition of the coil it worked just great has all the power with the belly mower that any 9hp tractor does. Good luck
