You can use about any flat belting, with or without a splice. Continuous belting is a little better. Round baler belting works OK. The belt doesn't have to be as wide as the pulley, but it should be long enough to allow you to tension it using the sag of the belt between pulleys. A 40 ft belt is not too long, with 30 ft the two pulleys are only 14 ft apart. The longer the belt, the more tansion you get from gravity sagging the belt in the middle. It is very hard to pull a belt tight while keeping it aligned if you are trying to pull it tight. If you just have to take most of the sag out it is much easier. I think most people give the belt a half twist to avoid build up of static electricity. My belt experience is running my hammermill with my H. Lined up right, the belt never comes off.
