Sparky, Don't know anything about an external regulator but you might be thinking about the ballast resistor which is used to reduce the voltage to the points to 6 volts so they have a normal life. The ballast resistor goes in the wiring prior to the coil unless you are using a new 12 volt coil which has one built in. Most folks retain the existing 6 volt coil and use a ballast resistor which is much less in price then a new coil. Hope this adds some clarification and not confusion to your conversion as the regulator is internal in the alternator, Hal.
