Engines were the main difference. The could both be had with gasoline engines which were not real common and the 826 had the German 358 diesel and was available in gear drive or hydro. 856 had the D407 engine and was only available in gear drive. I think the 856 might have had a little bit heavier rear end and axels but not sure. The D358 German diesel was a fine engine although they are getting very spendy to overhaul due mainly to parts availability. Unless I needed the hydro I would stay with the 856 because the D407 as well as just about everything else on that tractor was bullet proof.
