This noise is not normal on this model to my awareness. Many if not all of the old Cubs were noted for the whine from the gears. Sounds as if a bearing is going out. Why not jack the rear off the ground and with the engine off and the tractor in neutral rotate the wheels to see if you can determine a fault?
