If the tractor is in the condition you described valves guides are not the problem. If the oil is leaking past the guides the tractor will blow a big puff of white smoke when first started. This is from the oil collecting on top of the pistons after the tractors was stopped the last time. you have a leaky oil gauge line or valve cover gasket. Just my opinion.
