There is a drive in plug at rear of the camshaft bore. behind the steel plate. If the engine was completly overhauled and new cam bearings installed it would be removed and installed. Or if the camshaft was installed without the gear it could push the plug back. Or if a cam gear was pushed or drove on a cam in the engine without cam support the same. Retainers warping that the rear main seals go in is a common problem. Check the sides that contact the block and hold the two cleaned up halfs together at the parting line and look. Good sealant on the gaskets keeping it off the felt is needed sometimes. I used to use a sealant for motorcycles on the gaskets that would leave gasket material stuck to both sides if the parts were removed. Later they changed something in the formula, maybe to be more enviromentally friendly or something because its not any better than some others now.
