For the past several months, I've been looking at A's and Super A's. We had an A on my grandparents farm when I was a kid. The A was sold years ago and now I want a replacement. I've been leaning towards a Super because of the simple fact it has hydraulics. I attended a show yesterday and there was a SWEET looking restored 1951 Super A. I joking asked the owner if he'd like to sell it. He said it was for sale and I took it for a test drive. Problems I noticed were a high speed miss in the engine and about 6 inches of play in the steering wheel. There was a noticable whine in 3rd and 4th gear. Other than that, a very nice tractor. :-) The governor seemed to pick up well as I was applying the brakes while driving her. The owner also mentioned that he has a plug that fouls every now and then. Questions:
1) Am I looking at a major problem with the engine? It doesn't smoke and he said he's done nothing to the engine, not even a compression test. 2) I own no manuals, so can the steering play be adjusted in or around the gear box? 3) I whine alot but can remember if whining in these tractors was a trademark? He wants an awfull lot of money for this thing and I suspect it's not worth it. Thanks a million! Tyman

To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the
