I rebuilt 2 C169 engines for a IH 300 Utility. Both engines had the same problem- no oil pressure on start-up.
Perplexing to say the least. But in tinkering with the second engine, I pulled the spark plugs and ran it on the starter, with the filter housing base removed.
I put my finger over the inlet hole and cranked the starter- the oil pressure gauge went up to 25 psi.
So, that was a good lead. I went back to my gasket kit to see what was left over. Sure enough, there was a rubber grommet, about 3/8dia by 3/4 long, with a 1/16 hole through the middle. This grommet was just the right size to fit into the oil filter housing inlet hole in the block.
Inserted the grommet, replaced the filter base, filter canister, filter cover and cranked the engine- great oil pressure!
So, where did the original grommet go? I never saw one when I tore the engine down. Maybe it was really hard and brittle and fell apart when I removed the oil filter base. ?
Just posting for anyone else who may have this problem in the future.
