The easy route is to take the generator off and take it to your friendly local starter/generator repair shop. They can check out the generator and regulator and show you where the hot wire connects.

these shops are all over the country, but you may have to look for one that REPAIRS. Auto parts stores usually check the generator out and then recommends replacement because they usually don't have repair capabilities past replacing brushes.
