I wouldn't say "ruin" because if you keep your wits about you and follow a few common sense rules, you won't get scammed.
You can tell when someone's language is "off." The obvious use of "to be" where it doesn't belong for example. Using long words where short ones would be more appropriate when striking a deal on a piece of farm equipment.
You're looking at someone who doesn't use English much if at all, and quite possibly a computer translation. I hate to lump the occasional legitimate foreigner in with all the scammers but the ratio of scammer to legit from overseas is just overwhelming.
Cashier's Checks... That's their favorite delivery device for the scam. If they're sending someone have them bring the cash with them. Otherwise the check had better be for the EXACT amount. One dollar extra is a deal breaker.
