One of my cousin's had someone trying to run a scam like that on him. He has fun messing with them and wasting their time and money, even got one to send him the check FED-EX overnight, when he wouldn't send back the "extra" money they threatened to call the FBI him. He was using a free e-mail account that he made up with "usbankoftn" in the name, he than came back at them saying he worked at a bank and during a recent audit he "found" $368,479.23, would they like to assist him getting out of the US? He'd offer them 40% and you know I'm not scamming you because it's such an odd amount. Didn't hear back from them after that. Yes it's a PITA to deal with jerks like that, you're smart enough to be wary and have you bank verify any instrument presented for goods or services. Unfortunately the internet and international infrastructure allows scammers to try and the laws and our government both federal and international don't have a high priority in stopping this stuff. Unless we (all governments) band together to force these third world governments to deal with the issues if they don't withhold foreign aid and representation in the UN.
