To prevent alternator feedback from causing the coil to be energized (engine still runs with key off like when wiring a 3 wire GM 10 SI) even when IGN is off, a body can use:
1) A small diode (rectifier) (3 to 5 or more amps and at least 50 PIV will work) wired at correct polarity......
2) Or a small incandescent "idiot light" bulb which serves not one but two functions
3) Or a 10 or so ohm resistor.
I usually just use a resistor cuz you dont have to worry about its polarity,,,,,,,,,cheap n easy to buy and wire in and is durable,,,,,,,provides at least some degree of current limiting protection.
An incandescent idiot light provides some visual charge indication PLUS prevents feedback
Some gents (Bob M I think) even go so far as using an idiot light PLUS a shunt resistor so she still charges even if the light burns out !!!!
