I believe you are right. I wanted to put the seal in like a normal oil seal (lip inwards) but that side of the outer metal rim is cut very square so it didn't look like it was going to go. I did a little internet detective work after I read your reply. Turns out it is exactly as you said--a wiper seal to keep debris from getting to the main seal which is an O-ring & back up washer. I pressed the seals in tonight--it's all good. Thanks for your help!
