The battery voltage should increase by 1 or 2 volts with the tractor running at about half throttle. The ammeter should swing significantly in the charge direction as well. If you have to speculate whether or not the ammeter is actually moving, then chances are the tractor is not charging.
It is good to hear that you are still using the original charging system. I prefer to leave the charging systems original on my tractors but I have the advantage of working with electrical controls for a living. Most of the charging problems I have had are on tractors that are kept outside.
