I think you may be on the right track...STARTER. I've got a Super C that will do that once in a great while, you'll try to start it, and the starter will hang up, and lock the engine. I simply back the starter bolts out a little, and shake the starter and everything is fine. This tractor has only done it twice...weird when it happens. I agree with the other guys, I wouldn't pull it, you could really foul up something doing that. Lets us know what you find out.
